Hand Bound Book of Winter Branches

Drawn from trees and shrubs at our place on Bartlett’s Hill, Winter, 1974

The Cover Book of Winter Branches Cover

Hand bound in leather by Laurette Carroll. Twelve watercolors of a dozen different species, on deckle edge rag paper. 1974. 12 pages, 6 1/2” x 4 3/4”.

This is one of two books bound by Laurette that I worked in between 1969 and 1974. In this period, and beyond, I continued with botanical studies of winter branches, wildflowers, wetland plants and etc., on individual sheets of paper, some folded into signatures that were never bound. The works ranged in size from the above dimensions to over 36” by 23”.

This book features a dedication to long-time dear friends Marie Pacetta (who has since passed) and Jane Pinel. Jane is 96 at the time of this writing. Several years ago she generously returned this gift book to me.

As with the book of winter buds done between 1969 and 1972, this beautifully bound little volume could be included in the acquisition of an archival-level collection, or purchased as an individual object.

In my account of winter bud studies 1969-1972 I write of how I came to introduce studies of winter buds and branches into my botanical art, and the evolution and exhibition history of this branch (pun intended) of my paintings of plants wild (by far the major class) and cultivated.

Such drawings and watercolors were fundamental to my later six year epoch of producing art to illustrate scientific research in the field of tree pathology and forest ecology. [v. my “CODIT: compartmentalization of decay in trees” page.]

I have reserved a third hand bound book on winter buds to serve as a component of a core archive acquisition. These watercolors have a major place in my history as an artist. As an individual-object acquisition, this book is priced at $4,500.00.

I would be pleased to provide photos of all twelve pages to any party interested in either of the acquisition options outlined above.
